Issues in the News
1. SCIENCE
A U.S. Senator calls for inquiry into global warming report suppressed by the Environmental Protection Agency, while CEI calls on EPA to re-open the matter for public comment.
CEI Expert Available to Comment: General Counsel Sam
Kazman on CEI making
the study public:
“EPA sits on this report for over three months, and then only allows it to be made public on the author’s personal website. The fact that we have to formally re-file it with the agency indicates how unreal this situation is.”
2. BUSINESS
EPA grants California waiver to regulate fuel emissions.
CEI Expert Available to Comment: Senior Fellow Marlo
Lewis on what's
in store for California:
“Granting the waiver [allows] the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to impose potentially lethal burdens on an industry in crisis. California has no “extraordinary conditions” with respect either to atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations or the potential impacts thereof, and consequently does not “need” a waiver. The CARB program massively and directly regulates fuel economy, and thus violates the Energy Policy and Conservation Act (EPCA), which prohibits State law and regulation “related to” fuel economy.”
3. POLICY
The Obama administration backs dictatorship in Honduras
CEI Expert Available to Comment: Senior Attorney Hans
Bader on the administration’s role
in propping up this anti-American ruler:
“Honduras removed its bullying, autocratic President after he began behaving as a dictator, and its Congress replaced him with a less power-hungry member of his own political party. Now Obama is joining the Cuban dictator Castro and Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez in demanding the Honduran ruler’s return.”
