The immigration debate in Washington needs to move past the current illegal immigration problem to the future. If Congress is to seriously consider comprehensive immigration reform, it must address America’s broken legal immigration system. The system is beset by arbitrary restrictions, time constraints, and quotas. Real reform must address these issues. As America’s economy grows over the next few decades and ever greater numbers of baby-boomers retire, American businesses will need many more workers to power its economic growth. Increased immigration would mean more entrepreneurs, more labor, and more innovation in America. It is time for Congress to focus on getting legal immigration right. If it doesn’t, America will soon be right back where it is today, dealing with the consequences of a broken system.
