Issues in the News

1. ENERGY

President Bush makes access to affordable energy the focus of his Labor Day speech.

CEI Expert Available to Comment: Director of Energy & Global Warming Policy Myron Ebell on the action in Congress needed to increase access to domestic energy sources:

“While Americans struggle to pay higher gas prices, the Senate left for its August recess after refusing to take votes on two outstanding bills passed by the House of Representatives that would significantly increase domestic oil and natural gas production.  Instead, the Senate pretended to do something by voting to open a tiny area of the Gulf of Mexico to exploration—an area currently under a moratorium that expires next year.”

2. SAFETY

Wildfire spreads across 280 square miles of Montana.

CEI Expert Available to Comment: Senior Fellow Robert H. Nelson in the Wall Street Journal on how the federal government’s disastrous land management policies have led to increasingly destructive wildfires:

“For most of the 20th century, the Forest Service has failed to manage our national forests properly while treating fire as a virtual moral evil. Unless these policies are reversed, fires that consume millions of acres and inflict billions of dollars in damage will become more and more common.”

3. ENVIRONMENT

New limits on carbon dioxide emissions in California could slow down industrial production.

CEI Expert Available to Comment: Director of Energy & Global Warming Policy Myron Ebell on why California is heading down a failed path:

““While its actions are being lauded as a step into the future, California is actually a late entry into the already failed game of energy rationing. Europe, Japan and Canada are all failing spectacularly to meet their emissions reductions targets under the Kyoto Protocol, despite years of breathless cheerleading for cap-and-trade mechanisms. What California has done today is to decide to become a Third World economy.”
