CEI's Statement On The State Of The Union Address

January 29, 2002

“Tonight President Bush recognized the importance of ensuring affordable energy for Americans as a way to help achieve his pledge of reviving the economy.  America needs to increase energy production at home and open up more areas to drilling, including offshore areas and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, so we can be less dependent on foreign oil.

The president urged the Senate to pass his energy package, which the House has already accomplished.  While it isn’t perfect, the House-passed version of the energy package is far better than the Democratic alternatives in the Senate, which include increasing the federal government’s fuel economy standards program.  The CAFE (corporate average fuel economy) program has cost many lives because it has forced the downsizing of cars, which fare worse in crashes than heavier vehicles.  In practice, CAFE has forced Americans into a horrible blood for oil trade-off.”
