Institute Takes On Environmental Education: Michael Sanera and Center for Environmental Education Research Join CEI

March 23, 1999

Washington, D.C., March 24, 1999 – Efforts to educate children about environmental issues are hampered by inaccurate, biased, and misleading educational materials. A newly acquired project at the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) is designed to promote balance in environmental education.

The Center for Environmental Education Research (CEER) is a national leader in analyzing, critiquing, and reforming environmental education delivered to children in America’s elementary and high school classrooms. CEER will continue to be headed by Dr. Michael Sanera, a new Senior Fellow at CEI, and nationally recognized expert on environmental education. Sanera is the author (with Jane Shaw) of Facts not Fear: A Parent’s Guide to Teaching Children About the Environment (Regnery, 1996).

In the last four years, Dr. Sanera has analyzed the coverage of environmental issues in 130 textbooks and 170 children’s books. This research shows that the vast majority of these books present a biased and one-sided view of environmental issues. Children are routinely presented with scientifically unfounded doomsday scenarios in classroom materials and encouraged to engage in political activism. To counter this disturbing trend CEER is focused on providing unbiased educational materials on environmental issues and helping promote reforms in state-based environmental education programs.

"We are delighted to bring Dr. Sanera and CEER on board at CEI," commented Fred L. Smith, Jr., president of CEI. "It is imperative that children receive a balanced and truthful education on environmental issues and CEER is leading the way in that effort."

Prior to joining CEI, CEER was known as the Environmental Education Research Institute, and was affiliated with the Center for the New West. CEER will be based out of Tucson, Arizona.

CEI, a non-profit, non-partisan public policy group founded in 1984, is dedicated to the principles of free enterprise and limited government. For more information, contact Emily McGee, director of media relations, at 202-331-1010.
