TRA Should Open Bahrain to Competition

Nowrasteh Letter in Gulf Daily News, Bahrain

In response to "TRA seeks consumers’ comments on competition" (GDN, Nov. 14), the author described a ludicrous situation with an obvious solution.

A regulatory agency cannot determine consumer preferences, only consumers in a free market can.

Instead of regulating competition, the TRA should step back and open Bahrain to competition in all areas of telecommunications. Foreigners and domestic entrepreneurs, for which Bahrain is renowned, would fulfill any consumer demand quicker and at a cheaper price compared to a regulated alternative.

Truly competitive markets can only come from allowing unrestricted access and freedom of choice to businesses and consumers.

Anything less than free markets will result in too little competition, too high prices, and relative consumer dissatisfaction.
