Washington, D.C., September 24, 2002—Why are environmentalists opposed to pesticide spraying when it’s critical to public health, especially during the largest outbreak of West Nile Virus ever in the U.S.? Why do so many Americans think the world is running out of oil and other fossil fuels when it’s not? And why are so many environmentalists against the production of genetically modified crops when they’re safe to consume? <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
On the heels of the Earth Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, the Competitive Enterprise Institute is releasing its newest book on the state of our planet, Global Warming and Other Eco-Myths: How the Environmental Movement Uses False Science to Scare Us to Death (Prima Publishing 2002). In it, experts from around the world debunk many of the eco-myths that threaten economic progress and the environment itself. Some of the common myths refuted by the authors include:
Myth: A global climate disaster is looming.Fact: Damaging weather like hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods are not increasing in number or severity.
Myth: The global population is growing faster than our ability to produce food.Fact: Global fertility rates are falling dramatically, and with advances in agricultural biotechnology, farmers are producing more food using fewer resources than ever before.
Myth: Modern pesticides and fertilizers are increasing the rates of cancer in humans.Fact: No study has ever shown that anyone has developed cancer from the proper use of pesticides, and exposure to synthetic chemicals accounts for less than two percent of cancer cases.
Featured authors include Dr. Norman Borlaug, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize for launching the “Green Revolution”, Dr. John Christy, a leading climatologist, and Fred Smith, president and founder of CEI. Ron Bailey, science correspondent with Reason magazine, is editor of the book.
