The Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) released a public interest comment on Friday, June 24, 2011 in aggressive opposition to the proposed United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations on catfish imports to the United States. According to the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), the regulations would not only require foreign countries to match US safety inspection standards, but costs associated with implementing the new regulations would cost taxpayers upwards of $30 million. CEI considers this regulation blatantly anti-free market, protectionist, and unnecessary given current safety records of both domestic and imported catfish.
