    Just when I thought the Trump administration could not get any bolder in challenging California’s self-anointed power to determine national climate policy, the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Wednesday filed a constitutional challenge to the state’s greenhouse gas emission trading pacts with the Canadian provinces of Québec and Nova Scotia.

    The House Oversight Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties today held a hearing to examine “the oil industry’s efforts to suppress the truth about climate change.” More specifically, the subcommittee proposes to examine “how the oil industry’s climate denial campaign has negatively and disproportionately affected people of color and vulnerable populations in our country and around the world, as well as drowned out the voices of everyday Americans.”
  • Repeal of Trump Power Plant Rule Fails in Senate

    The U.S. Senate today defeated by 53-41 a Democrat-sponsored Congressional Review Act resolution of disapproval that aims to overturn the Trump administration’s Affordable Clean Energy (ACE) rule, which simultaneously repealed and replaced the Obama administration’s so-called Clean Power Plan (CPP).
  • United States, Carbon Tax Laggard?

    The United States “lags” other nations’ use of carbon taxes, ClimateWire (subscription required) reports. Specifically, the United States ranks 40th out of 44 countries in a new Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) report examining each country’s combined taxes on carbon-based energy sources. Such “taxes” include cap-and-trade programs, because those policies also put an explicit price on the carbon content of fuels or emissions.

    ​​​​​​​A California-led coalition of 24 states and three cities today petitioned the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals to declare unlawful the Trump administration’s One National Program Rule, which finds that California’s motor vehicle greenhouse gas emission standards and zero emission vehicle mandate are unlawful because they are pre-empted by the Energy Policy and Conservation Act.

    Today, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) took the first step towards finalizing the proposed Safer, Affordable, Fuel-Efficient (SAFE) Vehicles rule by issuing a final action entitled the “One National Program Rule.”

Each of the following candidates was in the spotlight for about 40 minutes: Julián Castro, Andrew Yang, Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), Joe Biden, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Mayer Pete Buttigieg (D-South Bend, IN), Beto O’Rourke, and Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ). Transcripts of each candidate’s segment are available here.

    Pollster Frank Luntz discussed climate policy Thursday night with Laura Ingraham on her Fox News program “The Ingraham Angle.” In the previous segment, Ingraham interviewed Competitive Enterprise Institute Senior Fellow Patrick Michaels, who debunked the “existential threat” rhetoric permeating CNN’s 7-hour “Climate Crisis Town Hall” on Wednesday. Michaels and Ingraham observed that for progressives, climate change is a pretext for confiscating other people’s assets and running their lives.
