  • A Fond Farewell to a Dear Friend

    July 30, 2020
James Gattuso (December 1, 1957 – July 23, 2020) has left behind a profound legacy of devotion to family and commitment to liberty. Requiescat in pace
  • A Memorial Note About Christopher L. Culp (April 7, 1969 – June 30, 2020)

    July 27, 2020
Chris Culp, or simply Culp as he was invariably known, died unexpectedly and leaves a loss in the world and in the CEI community to which he was instrumental.
  • Getting My Bearings in Taipei: Personally and Politically

    September 11, 2019
Key Insight of the Day: While not every aspect of life in Taiwan is dominated by the relationship with the People’s Republic of China, every policy conversation will come around to the topic quickly.
  • Sharing Insights and Observations from the Road: A Travelogue

    September 11, 2019
This week I’m in Taiwan as a part of a delegation of free-market trade experts. I’ll write short posts for the Competitive Enterprise Institute team to review and share here on OpenMarket. If it goes well, we’ll experiment with adding regular posts whenever I travel on behalf of CEI.
  • David Koch (1940-2019), R.I.P.

    August 23, 2019
Friend, philanthropist, inventor, and industrialist David Koch has died at the age of 79.  He was a father and husband. Known best for his pro-liberty activism and involvement in national politics, he also improved countless lives with more than a billion dollars in philanthropic donations to artistic, cultural, and medical charities. His generosity, optimism, and commitment to a freer world will continue to bear fruit for many generations.
  • Pop Federal Trade Commission's Dangerous Facebook Trial Balloon

    May 9, 2019
Facebook is reportedly negotiating a settlement with a powerful regulatory agency that would impose a new corporate structure, increase liability for one or more executives, and take aim at the company financially. Important protections for civil and economic rights are in jeopardy. The precedent could be catastrophic for the next person confronting a regulatory agency without the personal resources of Mark Zuckerberg.
  • Chuck Todd's 'Daily Show' Comments Got It Wrong on the Climate Debate

    January 25, 2019
Last night Chuck Todd went on “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” and was asked about his announcement on a recent episode of “Meet the Press,” (which was devoted entirely to climate change), to bar guests who dispute climate alarmism. I think CEI may have spurred the question.
  • Introducing a Free-Market Agenda for Accountability and Prosperity

    January 9, 2019
The governance of American life has been handed over to an operating system that subtly and perversely drives individuals’ behavior away from their own decisions. Unaccountable regulatory agencies dominate how we live, work, play, build, travel, prepare food, and heal one another.
  • CEI Takes on Antitrust

    December 14, 2018
There is a concerted effort from elements on both sides of the political aisle to use antitrust law to regulate and ultimately break apart Big Tech companies. This is a grave mistake, and would represent one of the largest and most visible government interventions into the economy we’ve seen in decades.
