Lawmaker Seeks Improvements in Aviation Safety Regulation

News Releases

Today, Rep. Mark Meadows (R, N.C.) introduced a significant reform amendment to the Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization legislation. The amendment directs the FAA to use performance-based standards to achieve safety goals, an approach that allows for innovation and safety gains over government micro-managing. CEI senior fellow Marc Scribner has been a vocal advocate of this approach to regulation, and offered praise for the Meadows amendment:

“We applaud Rep. Meadows for working to ensure the Department of Transportation carries out its long-mandated duty to reform its regulatory structure in a performance-based direction. For too long, overly prescriptive rules issued by the Department have increased the cost of or outright prohibited the introduction of modern technologies and practices. Rep. Meadows’ amendment would help guide the Department as it continues its regulatory reform efforts.”
