Restrictions on Internet gambling go into effect this week.

CEI Expert Available to Comment: Policy Analyst Michelle Minton on why the restrictions will fail to reduce internet gambling.

“Most Internet gamblers will find a way to continue betting online despite the law. The difference now is that consumers will be denied access to legitimate credit processing companies and be forced to look beyond the banks they know and trust, ending up at a greater risk for fraud and identity theft.”

2. ENVIRONMENT

The Senate will soon vote on Lisa Murkowski’s resolution to stop the EPA from regulating carbon emissions under the Clean Air Act.

CEI Expert Available to Comment: Senior Fellow Marlo Lewis on why Congress never intended the EPA to have that kind of regulatory power.

“Congress did not design the Clean Air Act to be a framework for climate policy, has never voted for the Act to be used as such a framework, and has never approved the regulatory cascade that EPA’s endangerment finding, if allowed to stand, will ineluctably trigger.”

3. HEALTH

Energy drinks that contain alcohol spark controversy among parents, consumers.

CEI Expert Available to Comment: Adjunct Analyst Baylen Linnekin on why regulators shouldn’t be singling them out for special treatment.

“The Food and Drug Administration’s campaign against alcohol energy drinks is wasteful and misguided. It is based on research unrelated to the products themselves and targets ingredients FDA should classify as generally recognized as safe. With more than 100 years of historical evidence that consumers can safely consume caffeine and alcohol together, the FDA should not stand in the way of adults’ drink choices.”
