Most Americans want a clean environment. That is no surprise. What surprises traditional environmental activists is that most people don’t support extensive federal regulation. Recent polling by the Competitive Enterprise Institute shows that support for environmental protection does not translate into support of federal regulation. Most Americans believe that state and local governments are in a better position to address most environmental concerns, from water pollution to urban sprawl.
