The federal Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards were originally imposed as a way to save oil, but is now billed as a way to save the environment. Neither promise has been fulfilled, yet CAFE has succeeded in one important, deadly way: by causing cars to be downsized, CAFE has killed thousands of people each year.
