President Bush outlines a new plan for national climate policy.

CEI Expert Available to Comment: Director of Energy & Global Warming Policy Myron Ebell on why the President is going down the wrong path:

“President Bush’s global warming proposals could have been worse. But it was still a pointless speech. While the President said that the global warming debate was intensifying, global warming alarmism is collapsing all around the world. With today’s proposals, however, the President has managed to re-energize that alarmism.”

A new study raises concerns about a connection between plastics and cancer.

CEI Expert Available to Comment: Director of Risk & Environmental Policy Angela Logomasini on why we don’t need to be alarmed:

“Reading the headline of a Washington Post story today, you would think that government researchers have made a new and major finding on a chemical that should make us all quiver in our boots. The headline reads: ‘U.S. Cites Fears on Chemical In Plastics.’ At issue is a yet-to-be-peer-reviewed brief released by the National Toxicology Program that reviewed existing research on the chemical Bisphenol A, which is found in some plastics products. Instead of discovering a problem, the draft brief underscores the fact that researchers have been unable to find any impact on humans from the chemical.”

3. TRADE

Democratic leaders in the House of Representatives sideline a pending free trade agreement with Colombia.

CEI Expert Available to Comment: Special Projects Counsel Hans Bader on the misplaced priorities in Congress:

“While blocking a trade agreement with Colombia’s democratically-elected, pro-American government, House leaders were supporting special tax breaks for an oil company controlled by Venezuela’s anti-American, anti-Semitic dictator, Hugo Chavez, who has hired liberal former Congressman Joe Kennedy to shill for him.”
