1. TECHNOLOGY

Congress considers a bill to fund new cybersecurity initiatives.

CEI Expert Available to Comment: Vice President for Policy Wayne Crews on why we shouldn’t turn cybersecurity into a bureaucracy:

“The future will deliver authentication technologies far more capable than those of today. Like everything else in the market, security technologies—from biometric identifiers to firewalls to network monitoring to encrypted databases—benefit from competition. Private cybersecurity initiatives will also gradually move us toward thriving liability and insurance markets, to help address the lack of authentication and inability to exclude bad actors that are at the root of today’s vulnerabilities. Security is an industry unto itself, let’s not turn it into bureaucracy.”

2. ENVIRONMENT

In the wake of ClimateGate, climate change alarmists are now having to defend the scholastic integrity of East Anglia scientists and the IPCC.

CEI Expert Available to Comment: Vice President for Strategy Iain Murray on whether the global-warming movement is dead:

“On top of all the other revelations about the IPCC, the business dealings of its chairman, Rajendra Pachauri, and the problems with the Stern Report, the public credibility of the global-warming movement has taken a terrible beating. The inevitable consequences are now being played out in the political sphere.”

3. LABOR

There are now more government union workers than private-industry union workers.

CEI Expert Available to Comment: Editorial Director Ivan Osorio on how organized labor will increase legislative efforts to unionize private industries:

“Indeed, today public sector unions constitute a permanent, organized, well-funded lobby for bigger government. However, that doesn’t mean that organized labor is giving up unionizing private sector workers.”
