Household Chemicals, Fuel Efficiency, and “The Story of Stuff”
The website KeepitOrganic.org, which warns people about the dangers of using plastic products containing bisphenol A (BPA), is actually owned and operated by the Glass Packaging Institute.
The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers tells The Washington Post that unless consumer demand for fuel efficient cars dramatically increases, the industry is going to have a hard time meeting new fuel efficiency standards.
The anti-capitalist video “The Story of Stuff” is now being shown in public schools across America.
1. SAFETY
The website KeepitOrganic.org, which warns people about the dangers of using plastic products containing bisphenol A (BPA), is actually owned and operated by the Glass Packaging Institute.
CEI Expert Available to Comment: Director of Risk and Environmental Policy Angela Logomasini on how people with a vested interest in regulating the plastics industry are creating hype about BPA.
“The GPI website is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to phony campaigns and claims about BPA. My colleagues Iain Murray and Michael Fumento have highlighted other political forces that are moving this issue, despite science to the contrary. A study on the topic published by Jon Entine at the American Enterprise Institute does a wonderful job documenting the crazy extent that activists–including some scientist-activists who were recently awarded federal grants to do research for NIH–have gone to push forward BPA bans.”
2. ENVIRONMENT
The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers tells The Washington Post that unless consumer demand for fuel efficient cars dramatically increases, the industry is going to have a hard time meeting new fuel efficiency standards.
CEI Expert Available to Comment: Vice President Iain Murray on what the Obama administration will do to force consumers to buy environmentally-friendly cars.
“When the president talks about how vehicles have not become more efficient over the past few vehicles, he is being disingenuous, because they have actually become much more efficient at providing more horsepower and more mass for the same amount of fuel. That’s what consumers want and in many cases need, but that’s also what makes this a particularly steep hill for the auto manufacturers to climb. With the principle that the Federal Government can mandate that individuals purchase something now established with the Obamacare Act (although that too is unconstitutional, as my colleague Hans Bader explains), how long before we see an act of Congress aimed at forcing Americans to buy unsafe but fuel-efficient vehicles?”

CEI Expert Available to Comment: Director of Bureaucrash Lee Doren on what’s wrong with “The Story of Stuff” and his plans to publically debate video creator Annie Leonard.
“Despite the flaws in Leonard’s arguments, which I outlined extensively in the critique, there is hope because Annie writes in her book, and states in interviews, that she welcomes debate. . . . I hope she’ll prove the late William F. Buckley wrong when he said: ‘Liberals claim to want to give a hearing to other views, but then are shocked and offended to discover that there are other views.’”
