CEI Regulation Expert Wayne Crews Becomes “Fred L. Smith, Jr. Fellow in Regulatory Studies”
Longtime regulation policy expert Clyde Wayne Crews is now the inaugural “Fred L. Smith, Jr. Fellow in Regulatory Studies” at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, a newly minted title honoring the work and legacy of CEI’s founder.
Crews analyzes the impact of government regulation on free enterprise, with a focus on the economic impact of the federal regulatory burden. He is the author of the annual report “Ten Thousand Commandments: An Annual Snapshot of the Federal Regulatory State” that offers a cost estimate of the federal regulatory state and tracks macro and political changes in the size and scope of regulation.
CEI President Kent Lassman commented on the significance of the new fellowship:
“CEI is devoted to reforms of the regulatory state that advance economic liberty and political accountability, a through-line from our founding by Fred Smith in 1984 to the present. We honor that tradition by inviting CEI’s Wayne Crews to serve as the Fred L. Smith, Jr. Fellow in Regulatory Studies. These men are giants in contemporary studies of regulation and the development of practical proposals to improve our lives.”
Crews elaborated on how his work builds on the legacy of CEI’s founder.
“What Fred established is unique in all the policy world, and it is my greatest joy to be a part of it and my greatest honor to be entrusted with carrying his vision forward,” said Crews. “Fred’s vision is one of advancing liberty across the board, from economy to ecology, and safeguarding against political predation via regulation. Fred knew that statism never rests, stands always ready to eclipse liberty. I hope to live up to Fred’s vision for communicating liberty in a way that appeals to people with diverse priorities and sensibilities.”
