CEI Supports House Bill to Preserve Motor Vehicle Choices for Americans

The House of Representatives is expected to hold a vote this week on H.R. 1435, the “Preserving Choice in Vehicle Purchases Act,” which would prevent the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from granting waivers to states that directly or indirectly limit the sale or use of new vehicles with internal combustion engines. The Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) supports H.R. 1435.

Director of CEI’s Center for Energy and Environment Daren Bakst said:

“The very idea that the government would try and stop Americans from buying gas-powered vehicles would have seemed crazy not that long ago. Well, welcome to crazy. California is banning the sale of new gas-powered vehicles by 2035. This is one of the most egregious attacks on personal freedom in recent memory.

“Fortunately, Representative John Joyce (R-PA) and many other House members have introduced H.R. 1435, the ‘Preserving Choice in Vehicle Purchases Act’ that is expected to be considered on the House floor this week. The legislation would stop the EPA from granting waivers to states that have vehicle emission standards that would directly or indirectly limit the sale or use of new motor vehicles with internal combustion engines.

“This legislation doesn’t get rid of the waiver authority. Instead, it is narrow in scope to ensure that Americans can drive the cars that they want to drive. By protecting this choice, it will also ensure that Americans can afford to drive cars in the first place. Further, it protects the mobility of Americans so they can drive inside and outside of their states.”
