The Federal Trade Commission today filed a lawsuit accusing John Deere, the tractor company, of forcing farmers to use authorized dealers for equipment repairs. CEI research fellow Alex Reinauer, an expert on “right-to-repair” and the FTC, criticized the commission’s action:

“The FTC’s suit against John Deere is a threat to innovation in the dynamic agricultural equipment industry. Commissioner Ferguson’s dissent highlights the agency’s lack of understanding of Deere’s repair ecosystem, even after more than three years of investigation.

“With less than a week before new leadership takes over, the FTC hastily filed this lawsuit, raising concerns that it may break more than it intends to fix.”
