CEI Names New Warren Brookes Fellow In Environmental Journalism

Washington, DC, September 17, 2001 – The Competitive Enterprise Institute is pleased to announce that Eileen Ciesla, formerly a staff writer with The American Spectator, has been named the 2001-02 Warren Brookes Fellow in Environmental Journalism.

Ms. Ciesla began her journalism career as an intern with the National Journalism Center in Washington, D.C. where she wrote for Investors Business Daily. Her writings have also appeared online in WorldNetDaily and The American Partisan.

“We are delighted that Eileen has agreed to become a part of the CEI team as our newest Warren Brookes Fellow,” said CEI President Fred L. Smith, Jr. “I am confident that her work here will be a credit to Warren’s memory.”

Ms. Ciesla is native of Colonia, New Jersey. She is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Rutgers University where she received degrees in Economics and U.S. History. She received her Masters in Economics from Rutgers University in 1996.

CEI established the Warren Brookes Fellowship in 1991 to help identify and train promising young journalists, as well as experienced ones, who wish to improve their knowledge of environmental issues and free market economics. 

Warren Brookes was a columnist for the Boston Herald and later the Detroit News where his columns questioned the conventional wisdom of economic and environmental policies. In addition, he wrote frequently for the Washington Times.  Many of his finest columns have been collected in Unconventional Wisdoms: The Best of Warren Brookes (PRI, 1997).
