When
CEI will host the next in the series of Alfred E. Kahn Discussions, an evening devoted to how we develop and advance serious regulatory reforms in the current political environment featuring the Honorable Elaine L. Chao. The former Secretary of Transportation and Secretary of Labor will kick start the conversation with comments about her experience as a constructive agent of change while outside of government. We will focus on the prospects for bipartisan agreement on proposals such as procedural transparency, Congressional oversight, and other structural changes to the regulatory state.

Secretary Elaine L. Chao served in two Presidential cabinet positions, as the 18th U.S. Secretary of Transportation and the 24th U.S. Secretary of Labor. When she was unanimously confirmed to her first post as Secretary of Labor, she became the first woman of Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage to be appointed to the President’s cabinet. As Secretary of Transportation, she emphasized the key role infrastructure plays in our nation’s competitiveness, productivity, and quality of life. As U.S. Secretary of Labor, she focused on increasing the competitiveness of America’s workforce in the global economy, promoted job creation, and achieved record results in workplace safety and health.
Prior to her appointments, she was President and CEO of United Way of America and Director of the Peace Corps. She began her career in public service working on transportation and trade issues at the White House, then served as Deputy Maritime Administrator, Chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission, and Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation.
In 2017, Secretary Chao delivered the keynote at the CEI Annual Dinner.
