A farmers’ protest for less government?
Whenever I see farmers protesting, I usually expect them to be crying out for government favors in the form of higher subsidies and trade barriers — so it’s refreshing to see a farmer protest calling for less government intervention. Argentine farmers have been protesting a steep increase in export taxes, which the populist government of Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner has been promoting on wealth redistribution (read: class warfare) grounds.
Given the serious problems now facing Hugo Chavez in Venezuela and Evo Morales in Bolivia, it may not be too much to hope for South America’s far-Left wave to have crested, and now be receding.
