World Scoffs at Trump’s Paris Negotiation Pledge

ALL THE WORLD’S HIS STAGE: President Donald Trump delivered for his base but further isolated himself on the world stage Thursday when he followed through on his promise to exit the Paris climate deal. Trump’s half-hour Rose Garden speech featured contradictory portrayals of the deal — calling it both “nonbinding” and “draconian” in a single sentence. And the president did nothing to walk back his longstanding view that manmade climate change itself is a hoax (a stance disputed by virtually all scientists). But Trump also offered a slight concession when he said he would be willing to negotiate a return to the agreement — on terms more favorable to U.S. companies. “I was elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris,” he said.

Conservatives cheer, want more: The Rose Garden guest list included representatives of some of Washington’s most conservative advocacy groups who were quick to praise Trump for a decision they had urged him to make. “By keeping his promise to cancel our involvement, President Trump has taken another positive step toward resetting a generation of failed energy and environmental policies,” American Energy Alliance President Tom Pyle said in a statement. The Competitive Enterprise Institute’s Myron Ebell said Trump made the right move but could be more aggressive. “To put an end to this 25-year misadventure in global governance and prevent a future stroke of the pen from restarting this mess, President Trump should submit the treaty to the Senate” where a ratification vote would fail, he said in a statement.
