CEI Warns Trump China Tariffs Will Backfire
President Donald Trump announced today he will slap 25 percent tariffs on Chinese technology imports. CEI Fellow Ryan Young warned the move will backfire.
“President Trump ‘s new $50 billion trade tariffs on Chinese-made goods will prove ineffective and prompt retaliatory tariffs from Beijing. Instead of punishing intellectual property theft, the Trump tariffs will hurt American consumers and producers who had nothing to do with IP theft.
“More troubling, the tariffs are also unconstitutional, because only Congress has the authority to raise taxes, according to Article I, section 8 of the U.S. Constitution. Congress should stop President Trump’s dangerous, unilateral protectionism.”
