So-Called ‘Green New Deal’ Costs Would Be Stupendous, Implementation Catastrophic

Today, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) released a legislative outline of the so-called “Green New Deal.”

Director of CEI’s Center for Energy and Environment Myron Ebell said:

“The so-called Green New Deal resolution presented today by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) is a Back-to-the-Dark Ages Manifesto. It calls for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in ten years, ‘upgrading all existing buildings’, and replacing our vehicle fleet with electric cars and more mass transit. And turning our energy economy upside down must be accomplished while ending historic income inequities and oppression of disadvantaged groups. Needless to say, the costs would be stupendous, and the damage done by its policies would be catastrophic.

“Under President Trump’s leadership, the federal government has rolled back the Obama era’s energy-rationing regulations. The shale oil and gas revolution has made the United States the largest oil and natural gas producer in the world. Taking a Green Leap Backwards into energy poverty is going to be a hard sell to Americans when they consider the blessings of abundant and affordable energy.”
