Are streetcars an answer to America’s urban transit problems? Some say they’re making a well-deserved comeback. Others complain they’re a pointless throwback.

The 1950’s marked the end of the streetcar system. Buses and subways seemed more efficient replacements. But in recent years trolley cars have reappeared, with strong opponents and proponents.

Marc Scribner, Research Fellow at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, emphatically says No.

Dan Tangherlini, former Administrator, General Services Administration and Director of Transportation for the District of Columbia, enthusiastically says Yes.

Scribner and Tangherlini will debate the pros and cons of resurrecting the streetcar at a National Press Club Newsmakers news conference scheduled for Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at 10 a.m. in the club’s Zenger Room, on the 13th Floor of the National Press Building, 529 14th St. NW, Washington DC 20045.

Like all Newsmaker events, this news conference is open to credentialed press and NPC club members, free of charge. No advance registration is required.
