Competitive Enterprise Institute
You’re Invited
August 22, 2019

Please join the Competitive Enterprise Institute for a reception and conversation with Mike Chase, author of the recently published How to Become a Federal Criminal: An Illustrated Handbook for the Aspiring Offender.

Solid State Books will be on site with hardcover copies available for purchase. Mike Chase will be available for signings at the reception following the discussion.

CEI President Kent Lassman will interview Chase about how overregulation has turned us all into federal criminals. While chances are slim that you will be prosecuted for silly violations—such as having “offensive personal hygiene” at the Library of Congress, corresponding with or yielding your boat to a pirate, brewing more than 100 gallons of beer at home, or knowingly importing a pregnant polar bear—Chase warns that if you are prosecuted, government conviction rates approach 100 percent. Chase compellingly recommends that we think closely about the hundreds of thousands—and growing number—of obscure federal crimes on the books.

By day, Mike Chase is a criminal defense lawyer. By night, he’s the legal humorist behind the @CrimeADay Twitter feed, where he offers a daily dose of his extensive research into the curious, intriguing, and often amusing history of America’s expansive criminal laws. Mike’s work has made him the go-to commentator on the countless weird and esoteric federal criminal laws buried deep in the books.
