About the Role
The Managing Editor reports to the Director of Publications. The Managing Editor oversees the full editorial and production process for all of CEI’s policy publications, including reports by staff and outside authors, policy papers, blog posts and certain other communication materials.
This position requires strong project management abilities. The Managing Editor is responsible for guiding each publication through every stage – from reviewing arguments, copyediting, and style review to layout, production and vendor coordination. The position also includes supervising external contractors and vendors to endure quality and timely delivery. This position will also supervise at least one other internal editing staff member.
Key responsibilities include establishing and maintaining production schedules, ensuring strict quality control, assigning editorial tasks and clearly communicating the level and type of editing required for each project.
This is an in-office position in Washington DC, requiring at least four days a week in office with one day working from home. Requests to work remotely will not be considered.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate the print publishing cycle and manage the publications process, including maintenance of the publications queue
- Set publication standards and establish goals and expectations
- Oversee layout (artwork, design, photography) and check content for accuracy and errors
- Proofread, edit and improve research products, regulatory comments, and opinion pieces
- Manage workflow, including developing specifications, requesting schedules and estimates, arranging graphic and design services, and managing proofreading and editorial work
- Cooperate and liaise with outside vendors
- Ensure compliance with media law and ethical guidelines
- Meet deadlines and manage publications budget
- Regularly update the policy, communications, and development staff of the status and progress of upcoming publications in the queue
- Limited travel is required for this role (approximately 10%)
Characteristics

- Philosophically classical liberal or libertarian; familiarity with classical liberal or libertarian literature a definite plus
- Minimum of five years of related policy editorial experience; including an in-depth knowledge of scholarly publication workflows, editorial best practices and production processes
- Detail-oriented; you are relentless about accuracy in grammar, punctuation, and format
- You value good writing style and know how to work with authors to ensure it
- Excellent editing and writing capabilities and oral communication skills; any type of strong writing skills will be considered, but policy and/or public affairs experience provides added benefit
- Deadline-driven: making the trains run on time and meeting deadlines are simply part of your DNA
- Clear and demonstrated commitment to free markets and individual liberty
- Team player; cheerful willingness to work with, not just alongside, colleagues who bring various skills, experiences, and perspectives to CEI’s mission

- Vendor management experience a plus including contract negotiation and evaluation
Salary
The projected annual salary range for this role is $80,000-$120,000, contingent upon the specific skills and experience of the selected candidate.
