The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Department of Justice (DOJ) announced new antitrust investigations into investments in Artificial Intelligence (AI) made by Microsoft, OpenAI, and Nvidia. FTC will probe Microsoft and OpenAI, while DOJ will investigate Nvidia. Director of CEI’s Center for Technology and Innovation Jessica Melugin explains why this move creates unnecessary barriers to domestic AI innovation.

“These latest inquiries show that U.S. regulators continue to hobble this country in the race for global AI dominance. As China races ahead with enormous investments, the FTC and DOJ are throwing out roadblocks for our free enterprise system. As these agencies cite ‘falling behind’ the EU in regulating the technology, instead they should be noting how the old world’s approach has led to a lack of any AI industry on the continent. That’s a path the U.S. can’t afford to follow with China biting at our heels.”
