Canada implements tariffs on American goods as trade war escalates: CEI analysis

Today, Canada implemented tariffs against a variety of American goods, ranging from 15 percent to 50 percent. CEI senior economist Ryan Young says this trade war will harm American consumers and the relationship the US has with its northern neighbor.

“Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney more or less has to retaliate against the US because he would face political backlash for restraining himself. Canadians are in a fighting mood. That’s the short run problem.

“In the longer run, Americans should be worried about Canada bypassing American trade and doing business instead with Europe and China. Repairing the damage America has done to its relationship with Canada will take a long time to restore. We can only hope that the damage is not permanent.”
