Enlightened Green Alternative To Earth Day Blues
Washington, DC, April 17, 1998 —Saving the planet is a nice idea, but the focus on Earth Day has for too long been on the costly, inefficient, and outdated regulatory programs of the Washington environmental establishment instead of ideas and policies that can effectively and economically get the job done. The centralized programs currently in place control land use, micromanage businesses, and restrict choice. A market-based approach, which is being used successfully in other countries, is the answer in this country as well. “We don’t have too much market influence in environmental policy, but too little,” said Fred L. Smith, Jr., president and founder of the Competitive Enterprise Institute.
According to the Wall Street Journal, CEI is “…the best environmental think tank in Washington.” CEI is home to the nation’s largest free-market environmental program – an increasingly popular alternative to the current command-and-control policies that have dominated environmental policy over the years.
