Washington, D.C., October 6, 1999 – This week marks the release of the second edition of Facts, Not Fear: Teaching Children About the Environment by Michael Sanera and Jane S. Shaw. The revised edition of Facts, Not Fear features non-technical treatments of 14 major environmental topics and strategies educators and parents can use to present them to children.
Facts, Not Fear corrects many popular misconceptions that have found their way into environmental curriculums in recent years, including unquestioned doomsday predictions of environmental disaster. Sanera and Shaw show us that the US is not running out of trees, will not end up buried under landfills, and global warming will not make the world our children inherit too hot to live in.
Praise for the first edition of Facts, Not Fear:
“As a father and an environmentalist…I am particularly dismayed by the degree of pessimism for the future that is generated by predictions of an environmental apocalypse. …Facts, Not Fear can help parents give their children a positive attitude towards the environment.”
—Patrick Moore, co-founder and former president of Greenpeace
“As a former research chemist now teaching middle-school science, I am concerned about the scientific ignorance underlying much of what now passes for environmental education.… That is the reason I am pleased to recommend Facts, Not Fear, a concise and easy-to-use alternative resource.”
—Diane Lanier, science teacher, Huntsville Middle School, Huntsville, Alabama
“Our parents love Facts, Not Fear! It is a parent-friendly resource offering practical tips for providing children with a common-sense approach to understanding and appreciating our environment.”
—Leah Vukmir, President, Parents Raising Education Standards in Schools (PRESS)
