New Warren T. Brookes Journalism Fellow to Join CEI

Washington, D.C., October 12, 2005— The Competitive Enterprise Institute is pleased to announce that Timothy P. Carney has been selected as the 2006 Warren T. Brookes Journalism Fellow.

Carney comes to CEI from a fellowship with the Phillips Foundation, during which he began work on his forthcoming book Partners in Plunder: How Big Business and Big Government Undermine the Free Market. Carney describes how government regulation, rather than restraining business interests, frequently benefits big business at the expense of consumers and the free market.

During the course of the coming year Carney plans to finish work on Partners in Plunder and focus on the themes which informed the journalistic career of the fellowship’s namesake, Warren T. Brookes: economic freedom, skepticism of both business and government, and an understanding of the limitless capacity of human beings to create and achieve in a free society.

Previously, Carney wrote for the Evans-Novak Political Report and the newspaper Human Events.  He is a graduate of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags” />St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland.

The one-year fellowship is named in honor of the late nationally syndicated columnist, Warren T. Brookes, who was known for his tradition of reporting from a sound scientific and economic perspective.  Through the program, established after Brookes’ death in 1991, CEI allows journalists the opportunity to improve their knowledge of the principles of free markets and limited government.

Previous Warren Brookes Fellows have included syndicated columnist Michael Fumento, Reason magazine science correspondent Ron Bailey, and author James Bovard.
