Supreme Court Decision Upholding Relaxed Media Ownership Rules a Win for Local News and Consumers
The United States Supreme Court today upheld a decision by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to relax media ownership rules, freeing up the industry to function with greater competition and fewer restrictions.
Director of CEI’s Center for Technology and Innovation Jessica Melugin reacted to the decision:
“Today’s decision is great news for local news and its consumers. Changes in the media landscape since these restrictions were enacted make them almost impossible to justify. The rise of the Internet, satellite radio, cable news and more all make it imperative that local newspapers and radio and television broadcasters be able to adapt, coordinate and evolve to compete. Lifting these outdated restrictions will allow for maximum benefit for American media consumers.”
