President Trump says he plans an executive order on February 10 reversing Biden administration policies favoring paper straws over plastic. Daren Bakst, CEI Director of the Center for Energy and Environment and Senior Fellow, praised the move, saying the president grasps consumer frustration about such restrictions and unfounded product demonization:

“During the Biden administration, there was an attack on consumer freedom, from the cars we drive, the appliances we use, to even the straws we use to drink our favorite beverages. President Trump clearly gets this and is right to turn his attention to the attack on plastic straws. Let Americans decide what kind of straws they want to use. Don’t use the power of government to undermine the use of plastic, including plastic straws.

“Those who push such policies seem to forget there are costs and tradeoffs. If you ban plastic straws, what is the alternative? Americans know all too well the failings of paper straws that get soggy and unpleasant. Meanwhile, glass straws can shatter, and metal straws are difficult to clean. The reason plastic straws are popular is because they work well, are lightweight, easy to transport, and safe for use – a matter of particular concern for individuals with disabilities.

“Government meddling is often a cure worse than the disease. That’s definitely the case with bans or restrictions on plastic straws.”
