Trump’s tariffs on China mean more economic pain on the way for consumers: CEI analysis

President Trump announced on Monday a 50 percent retaliatory tariff against China’s 34 percent retaliatory tariff. CEI senior economist Ryan Young says enough is enough.
“Going back to Trump’s first term, this makes the seventh round of back-and-forth tariffs with China. Beijing has not made a single substantive reform in response to Trump’s tariffs. This round will not go any better than the others. Tariffs do not work as a negotiating tool, and it is time to put them away.
“One of America’s most important founding ideas is the separation of powers. The president is using powers to raise tariffs that are only tenuously connected to the reasons Congress granted him those powers. Congress and the courts need to reclaim it before Trump does even more damage to America’s economy and foreign policy interests.”
