In 1984, Fred L. Smith, Jr., a self-described “knee-jerk-liberal”-turned-free-market conservative, came to a disturbing realization.  Even with Ronald Reagan firmly ensconced in the White House, the advocacy groups of the Left were, in Smith’s view, doing a much better job of selling their ideas to the public.
