Comments to the Food and Drug Administration on their tenative determination to revoke the Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status of partially hydrogenated oil, also known as trans fats. We believe this results in a de facto ban on the use of all trans fats as a food additive and the case for revoking the GRAS status is based on flawed science and political pressure. Furthermore, such a ban will not improve American’ heart health and lead to a host of negative unforeseen consequences, from increased food prices to greater sugar and saturated fat consumption.
