Issues in the News

1. HEALTH

New York City plans to ban the use of trans-fats in restaurant meals.

CEI Expert Available to Comment: Adjunct Analyst Steven Milloy on the low-fat diet myth:

“The widely-believed notion that low-fat diets are good for your health went ‘poof’ this week—although the busting of that myth shouldn’t be news to regular readers of this column. Low-fat diets didn’t reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, colorectal cancer or invasive breast cancer, according to three large studies published this week in the Journal of the American Medical Association.”

2. BUSINESS

A new report finds that the U.S. economy has dropped from first to sixth in global competitiveness.

CEI Expert Available to Comment: Economic Policy Fellow John Berlau launches the Center for Entrepreneurship to study how new businesses grow and prosper:

“The Center for Entrepreneurship was formed to specifically look at the areas of public policy entrepreneurs face when starting or building their businesses. If unnecessary rules prevent businessmen and women from launching their innovations, no other regulations matter. The Center starts out with one question: If entrepreneurs such as Bill Gates or Sam Walton were starting out today, what would be the barriers to them raising capital to get their ideas off the ground and keep their businesses growing?”

3. ENVIRONMENT

British Conservatives gather to debate the future of environmental policy in the UK.

CEI Expert Available to Comment: Senior Fellow Iain Murray live blogs the progress of the discussion:

“The Conservative Party Conference in the UK are discussing the environment this afternoon. The Conservatives have rebranded themselves as a green party, fully in favor of restrictions on carbon emissions.  … Questions from the floor have been very hostile to new taxes, and have pointed out the economic costs of higher fuel prices and air travel.  One lady pointed out that she went to the Alps by train.  The ‘opposition’ spokesman pointed out those trains are powered by nuclear power, which the Tories are also against.”
