Modest job numbers signal slow economic growth: CEI analysis

Just 29,000 jobs were added to the US economy in September 2026, according to the latest monthly government report, while the unemployment rate rose to 4.2 percent. CEI experts note this is another sign of slow economic growth.

Sean Higgins, CEI research fellow:

Friday’s Labor Department report showing that a modest 29,000 jobs were gained in September – and revising downwards July and August’s numbers by a combined 60,000 – provides further confirmation that the economy is in a slowdown. We remain stuck in the “no hire, no fire economy.”

The August 2026 report had provided hope that job creation was strengthening, but that appears to have been a blip. With yet more tariff uncertainty in the headlines and no relief from inflation, businesses remain reluctant to invest and hire. The silver lining is that layoffs are rare too. Businesses are similarly reluctant to let existing workers go for fear they won’t be able to hire them back later should things turn around.

One thing that has kept the jobs numbers from being worse is the aging of the Baby Boomer population, which is boosting hiring in health care services. Even that appears to be weakening, with gains of only 17,000 in that sector in September, below the 33,000 that has been the monthly average for the last year.

Ryan Young, CEI senior economist:

Wednesday’s better-than-expected GDP revision was followed up almost immediately by a worse-than-expected jobs report. Neither report is earth-shattering, but the jobs report makes it a bit less likely the Fed will raise interest rates again at its next meeting on October 27-28.

Most sectors’ gains and losses are small, indicating a no-hire, no-fire stance. While this is a good sign that a recession is not imminent, it could also mean companies are reluctant to make major investments.

Tariffs, trade wars, and Iran are making prices across the economy both higher and more volatile. One way companies are responding to that environment is to hunker down and try to ride it out.
