1. ENVIRONMENT

The Senate debates global warming legislation sponsored by Senators Joe Lieberman (I-CT) and John Warner (R-VA).

CEI Expert Available to Comment: Director of Energy & Global Warming Policy Myron Ebell on what we can expect from the Lieberman-Warner bill:

“Americans who don’t think gasoline prices are high enough should be thrilled to support the Lieberman-Warner cap-and-trade bill. Similar ineffective global warming policies have pushed gas prices above eight dollars a gallon in the European Union. Higher electricity and gas prices would hit poor people the hardest, but probably wouldn’t bother former Vice President Al Gore or Senator Barbara Boxer’s neighbors in Marin County, California.”

The Argentinian government faces widespread protests from farmers.

CEI Expert Available to Comment: Editorial Director Ivan Osoriothe dispute is over: on what

“Whenever I see farmers protesting, I usually expect them to be crying out for government favors in the form of higher subsidies and trade barriers — so it’s refreshing to see a farmer protest calling for less government intervention. Argentine farmers have been protesting a steep increase in export taxes, which the populist government of Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner has been promoting on wealth redistribution (read: class warfare) grounds.”

3. TRANSPORTATION

The Daily Mail of London reports that over 100 homeless people are living permanently in Heathrow airport.

CEI Expert Available to Comment: Senior Fellow Eli Lehrer on why he’s skeptical of the story:

“In two days of living at the airport herself, the reporter got ONE person to tell her story and provide a full name. She collects one more first-hand story. If the charity or BAA has ANY evidence of close to 111 people, this just doesn’t jibe. When I worked as a reporter, I wrote a few stories about the homeless myself. Most were willing to talk with me. Given that the story is decently written, I doubt she’s bad at her job and, if she really spent two days in the airport, she’s not lazy either. I think that she simply couldn’t find many people.”
