Issues in the News
1. ENVIRONMENT
The attorney general of California sues the world’s six largest automakers, alleging environmental damage from auto emissions contributing to global warming.
CEI Expert Available to Comment: Director of Energy Policy Myron Ebell on California’s latest regulatory effort on greenhouse gas emissions:
“With energy as one of the largest costs for industrial and manufacturing businesses, the increase in prices sure to come from an emissions cap will like drive jobs out of California to neighboring states. The legislation will also force consumers to use much less electricity and gasoline and to pay much higher prices for what they do use.”
2. FINANCE
An influential new group of economists and businessmen come together to study what the future of financial regulation should look like.
CEI Expert Available to Comment: Economic Policy Fellow John Berlau launches the Center for Entrepreneurship to study how financial regulations affect new business ventures:
“The Center for Entrepreneurship was formed to specifically look at the areas of public policy entrepreneurs face when starting or building their businesses. If unnecessary rules prevent businessmen and women from launching their innovations, no other regulations matter. The Center starts out with one question: If entrepreneurs such as Bill Gates or Sam Walton were starting out today, what would be the barriers to them raising capital to get their ideas off the ground and keep their businesses growing?”
3. ENERGY
A massive new oil discovery in the Gulf of Mexico focuses attention on pending congressional legislation on offshore oil and gas exploration.
CEI Expert Available to Comment: Director of Energy Policy Myron Ebell on the need for swift action in Congress:
“With gas prices still high and concern over importing oil from unstable regimes at an all time high, American consumers deserve legislation that will significantly increase domestic oil and gas production.”
