Class is in session: Are educators ready for AI?
From the early internet to modern artificial intelligence (AI), technological change causes panic. News outlets often amplify fears surrounding AI. Teachers and parents worry about how using the technology affects the younger generation. School boards often react by pushing for blanket bans. There is merit to preserving critical writing, reading, and comprehension skills. At the same time, AI can improve understanding rather than undermine it.
In early 2023, New York City public schools banned students from using ChatGPT, then reversed that decision just four months later. To encourage AI literacy, the Office of Education Technology released an “Empowering Education Leaders” toolkit. To complicate matters, some are starting to grapple with fully automated schools such as Alpha School. Amid these shifts, it is important to understand how AI affects educational outcomes.
Student adoption of AI is already widespread. OpenAI reported that many young adults use AI for starting projects, summarizing texts, brainstorming, editing, and research. A 2025 RAND Corporation study found that AI use by students jumped from 48 to 62 percent in seven months. Educators increasingly rely on AI, with many reporting that it is already integrated into standard classroom tools. Accordingly, professional development training should encourage teachers to use AI effectively.
Despite widespread skepticism, AI does not inherently replace originality and critical thinking. Yet, the education system faces academic integrity challenges without implementation strategies. Students currently use AI improperly, while detectors are often flawed. To discourage cognitive offloading, schools should clearly outline how to use AI as an assistive technology. Some suggest that modern literacy requires knowing how to differentiate fact from fiction. As with AI integration in other sectors, literacy and deliberate use are more effective at addressing new challenges than outright bans.
There are existing strategies to preserve integrity. Rather than banning the technology, the Estonian school system is using AI as a conversation partner for interactive lessons while encouraging more handwritten essays. Some teachers in the UK are considering using oral examinations. This demonstrates how integrating AI can reinforce the value of real-world skills for testing while also improving student understanding.
In higher education, humanities programs might adopt an approach like Estonia’s. In contrast, a study published in Scientific Reports found that AI can benefit university STEM courses. Students spend much of their time learning foundational concepts, a process which could be streamlined through a flipped classroom approach. AI platforms can tutor students at individualized paces and adapt to different learning styles. This would mimic traditional teaching while providing active feedback. The study found that this improves test scores and reduces learning time, allowing in-person classes to focus on synthesis and discussion.
To better support their customers, large platforms such as OpenAI and Google released education-specific models designed to provide instructional guidance. Other third-party tutoring platforms are also turning to AI help with online lessons. To further American innovation, schools are expanding computer science and AI degree offerings. Granting universities the freedom to choose how they integrate AI allows them to best accommodate the needs of their students and faculty.
During a congressional hearing on AI in higher education, lawmakers voiced support for AI adoption initiatives. They focused on the need to prepare the younger generation for an AI-powered workforce. There is growing recognition that learning to use technology is essential to workplace readiness. As we have seen throughout history, innovation requires intentional implementation by those adopting it. We can only achieve this by responsibly embracing AI, not ignoring it.
