Can Regulators Keep up with the Pace of Self-Driving Tech?

Automotive News cited Marc Scribner on self-driving vehicles, standards, safety technologies and regulations.

“This goes well beyond the types of technology NHTSA has dealt with in the past,” said Marc Scribner, a senior fellow at the Competitive Enterprise Institute. “This is a big learning experience for regulators.”

“This is a problem that has been ongoing for decades,” Scribner said. “It’s only going to get worse as these developers are coming up with these really transformative technologies.”

Standards bodies are issuing and updating autonomous-related rules more frequently, a function of how quickly tech is moving from research labs to public testing and exacerbated by the speed of software updates.

“As this technology rapidly evolves over the coming years as we reach a deployment stage, we have to expect SAE and similar groups will be revising standards much more quickly than every five years,” Scribner said.
