Government in Your Car

CEI General Counsel Sam Kazman discusses the unintended consequences of government mandates for auto manufacturers. CAFE fuel effciency standards result in smaller, lighter cars, which cause 2,000 more auto collision deaths every year. Airbags were once recommended for small children, resulting in unnecessary deaths. Kazman says it's not necessary for the government to force safety or efficiency mandates on its citizens, since they already have an incentive to maximize both.
