After all, rank-and-file Teamsters warmed to Trump in 2024, even though O’Brien never endorsed the president and more than 90 percent of his union’s campaign contributions that cycle went to Democrats.

“Unions have always been this unusual institution, in that some aspects of them are very culturally conservative, even if a lot of their policies are to the left,” said Sean Higgins, a research fellow at the Competitive Enterprise Institute specializing in labor and employment issues.
