The Competitive Enterprise Institute<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office” />

invites you to a lunch briefing with

Dr. Robert H. Nelson

author of

A Burning Issue: The Case for Abolishing the U.S. Forest Service

Friday, June 9, 2000

12 – 2 PM

1334 Longworth House Office Building

Buffet Lunch

Bob Nelson will discuss his new book, A Burning Issue, in the context of recent failures of federal land management such as the Los Alamos fire.  Nelson argues that the Forest Service lacks a coherent vision and prefers to sponsor only fashionable environmental solutions – most recently ecosystem management.  Instead, Nelson advocates replacing the Forest Service with a decentralized system to manage the protection of our national forests.

Bob Nelson is one of the nation’s leading experts on federal land management.  He served for 18 years in the Department of the Interior’s Office of Policy Analysis.  He is now professor of environmental policy in the School of Public Affairs at the University of Maryland and senior fellow of the Competitive Enterprise Institute. His other books include Public Lands and Private Rights: The Failure of Scientific Management (Rowman & Littlefield).  Please join us for this important and timely briefing.
