CEI Announces Second Annual ‘Out of the Storm’ Conference on Insurance Reform

Washington, D.C.,
August 6, 2009—The Competitive Enterprise Institute’s Center for Risk,
Regulation, and Markets (RRM) announced today that they will be co-hosting a
conference in New Orleans along with the Louisiana and South
Carolina Departments of Insurance, the American Legislative Exchange Council
and a variety of other organizations. The conference, entitled “Out of the
Storm 2009: Making Reform Work,” will gather distinguished speakers and guests
to discuss issues relating to disaster and insurance reform.

The conference will focus on the successes and challenges
that hurricane-prone states have faced as part of ambitious property insurance
reform efforts.

“We’re trying to ask the tough questions and provide them
with – at minimum – partial answers. Louisiana
and South Carolina
have both gone down the road of pro-market reform for hurricane-prone areas,”
says RRM Director Eli Lehrer.
“This is sure to be an important conference.”

The second annual Out of the Storm conference will feature
over two days of panels, seminars, and workshops. Invited speakers include
Bobby Jindal, Governor of Louisiana, and Craig Fugate, Director of the Federal Emergency
Management Agency.

“Last year’s
conference in South Carolina
was a great success and I’m sure this year’s will be as well” said Scott
Richardson, Director of the South Carolina Department of Insurance, adding
“The event is a no-holds-barred, completely open forum where we encourage new
and even controversial ideas to be discussed.”

The conference will be held at the New Orleans Sheraton from
September 30th to October 2nd. The registration fee is
$300 before September 1st, $450 after September 1st and $75
for family members (meals only). Conference fees will cover hotel meals and
include discounted room rates. Those who wish to register or who have questions
can find more information at the conference
website
or can contact conference organizer, Jesse Buggs, at [email protected] or 202-331-2366.
