CEI Applauds Sensenbrenner Bill to Stem Fallout from Supreme Court Decision on Internet Sales Tax

Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-WI) introduced the Online Sales Simplicity and Small Business Relief Act of 2018 today, aimed at protecting taxpayers and online entrepreneurs from the harmful effects of the Supreme Court decision in South Dakota v. Wayfair.

CEI associate director of the Center for Technology & Innovation Jessica Melugin said:

“The legislation introduced today by Rep. Sensenbrenner (R-WI) seeks to stem the fallout from the Supreme Court’s recent South Dakota v. Wayfair decision that allowed states to collect sales taxes from businesses with no physical presence in the state. CEI continues to champion legislative action to contain a state’s tax and regulatory powers to the citizens and entities of that state. Today’s bill is a crucial first step in stopping the harmful real-world consequences of the Wayfair decision, including small online businesses confused about tax obligations that differ from state to state and owing onerous back taxes from sales made in the past. Unfortunately, the Wayfair decision abandoned the principles of healthy tax competition and ‘no taxation without representation.’ CEI lauds Rep. Sensenbrenner for seeking to protect both taxpayers and online entrepreneurs.”
